I was commissioned by artist Colin Higginson to produce a written response to his exhibition ‘In the Manner in Which it Appears’ at SVA’s John Street Gallery. Over the course of a week I engaged with the work, talking at length with Colin and approaching the exhibition from various creative and critical angles. I also ran a creative writing workshop, encouraging participants to respond to the show. The writing produced from the residency became a publication, available in selected art galleries and spaces around Bristol and the South West.

{*} Hard To Look At, Whitespace, Edinburgh
As part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts & Festival I received funding from Thrive Edinburgh to curate a show exploring the question of ‘How do we show ‘difficult’ art without re-traumatising the artist or harming or triggering the viewer?’ I did this by showing the work of three artists – myself (Luke ‘Luca’ Cockayne), Carys Reilly, and Chandelle Waugh – and continuously curating it in response to the how the audience and the exhibition team felt.

Work Experience
Saltspace – Committee Member
2023 – 2025
Saltspace is an artist’s run gallery and studio facilitator that provides emerging artists in Glasgow and Scotland space to create, exhibit and share their work. As a committee member I helped apply for funding, supported exhibitors, ran events, maintained the gallery, and generally tried to ensure that our members felt seen and heard.
Thinking Bout Drawing – Drawing Tutor
2020-2023
During the first lockdown of the Covid-19 pandemic I started posting online drawing lessons for a small group of students. The lessons usually contained a conceptual prompt “draw in the sand”, “draw yourself with your eyes closed” and were more about teaching the students to think about the act of drawing itself than to teach a particular style of illustration or formal draughtmenship techniques.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind – Planning Group Volunteer
2022
Having taken part twice before in this annual group exhibition of work from people with lived experience of mental health issues, I decided to be more involved in the planning, curating, marketing, invigilating, and running of the exhibition in 2022. I also produced a larger, collaborative artwork for the show and helped run a zine-making workshop.
Artificial Womb – Founder & Editor-In-Chief
2015 – 2022
Artificial Womb was a feminist arts zine, which I founded and edited. My role involved managing the team, writing articles, proof-reading and editing pieces, sourcing images, doing the graphic design, basic bookkeeping, and selling and promoting the zine through events and social media. We also had an online/pop-up shop, which I ran, that stocked both my personal fine art work and work by other feminist and queer creatives.
Edwin Morgan Trust – Administration and Communications Assistant
2022
I was brought on to help promote the biennial Edwin Morgan Poetry Award. This included advertising and live tweeting an info session, maintaining the social media, and administrative tasks like sorting entries and contacting applicants.
The Queer Dot – Co-Chair and Founding Member
2019 – 2022
Helped set up and run a queer arts collective, which involved organising and curating group shows, producing zines, and working as a team.
Touch of Glass – Stall Vendor
2021
As part of a team I was responsible for running a stall in a shopping centre for a company that sold decorative glass coasters. During a shift I would be expected to run the stall on my own, which often involved opening or closing alone, counting up the days takings, stock-taking, cash handling, light cleaning, and customer service.
Round Lemon – Guest Writer
2021
I contributed feature articles and artist interviews to this online art blog.
NEoN Digital Arts Festival – Various Roles
2016 – 2021
NEoN showcases the work of artists working in digital media locally and internationally. The work I did generated publicity throughout the year, as well as drawing attention to events during NEoN’s annual digital arts festival. Over the years my role expanded and contracted depending on the needs of the organisation – encompassing exhibition invigilation, assisting with workshops, writing and editing press releases, liaising with local and national media, organising print and online advertising, and managing the social media accounts. However, my core responsibility was to generate content for NEoN’s website – northeastofnorth.com – which I did by interviewing artists, writing articles, and reviewing related exhibitions.
Hotchpotch – Regular
2015-2021
Frequent performer at Dundee’s long-running monthly spoken word night.
Generator Projects – Associate Committee Member
2019 – 2020
Mainly I invigilated, but I have also helped with exhibition installation, social media, and drafting and proofreading press releases.
Dundee Design Project – Volunteer
2020
I volunteered at Dundee Design Project, a social enterprise that stocks artwork and products from local artists and designers, as well as craft supplies. I was a keyholder and opened up the shop one day a week.
Cooper Gallery – Gallery Assistant
2011 – 2019 (occassional)
As a gallery assistant my role included invigilating, stewarding, putting up posters, being available to members of the public, and generally helping out.
